Toolbox Label Size Guide: Choosing the Perfect Custom Badge
Choosing the right size toolbox label can make a big difference in how clean, organized, and professional your toolbox or garage setup looks. A label that is too small can be hard to read. A label that is too large can overpower the drawer or look out of place. The best size depends on where the badge will be used, how much text you need, and how bold you want it to look.
At ColKy, we make magnetic toolbox label badges, custom tool box name plates, and jumbo garage magnets in several sizes so you can match the badge to the job. Whether you are organizing a compact toolbox drawer, personalizing a tool cart, or creating a larger garage sign, this guide will help you choose the right fit.

Toolbox Label Size Guide: What to Consider Before Choosing a Size
Before picking a size, think about three things:
Where will it go?
Small drawers and tight spaces work best with smaller labels. Larger drawers, cabinets, doors, and display areas can handle bigger name plates.
How much text do you want?
Shorter text looks cleaner and more readable, especially on larger name plates. Longer text can still work but may need to be scaled down.
Do you want organization or personalization?
Smaller sizes are best for organizing drawers. Larger sizes are better for name plates and personalization.
5/8" Small Labels
The 5/8" Small size works best on drawers where space is limited. It is ideal for compact drawers, narrow drawer fronts, and smaller toolboxes.
This size is also great for longer labels. Our manufacturing process allows labels up to 9" long, and the smaller font size gives you more room for additional characters before running out of space.
It is the best choice if you want subtle labeling that does not become the main focal point of your toolbox. These labels help keep things organized without taking away from the overall look.
Best for:
Small drawers
Tight spaces
Compact toolboxes
Longer labels with more characters
Subtle, low-profile organization
If you are working with limited space or want a clean, understated look, this is the safest choice.
1" Standard Labels
The 1" Standard size is the most common and works best for most toolbox drawers. It provides a clean, readable label without taking up too much space.
However, keep in mind that many modern toolboxes have shorter drawers with handles that sit low on the face. In these cases, a 1" label can sometimes get partially hidden under the handle. Some toolboxes also have a slight lip or flange at the bottom of the drawer front, which pushes the badge upward and can further block visibility.
This is especially important to consider when choosing between Small and Standard sizes, as tighter drawer spacing can affect how visible the label will be.
Because of this, while 1" is still the go-to size for most drawers, it may not be ideal for very short drawer faces.
Best for:
Most toolbox drawers
Tool carts
Garage cabinets
Everyday labels
If you are labeling drawers, this is usually the best starting point—but consider smaller sizes for short drawers with low handles.
1-3/16" Medium Labels
The 1-3/16" Medium size is our standard name plate size and the best starting point for most custom name plate orders. It gives the badge more presence than a standard drawer label while still staying clean, balanced, and not overly large.
This size works well when you want to personalize a toolbox, cart, cabinet, or workstation without making the name plate feel oversized. It is a strong choice for names, short shop labels, cart labels, or personalized gift pieces.
Best for:
Custom name plates
Larger drawers
Tool carts and cabinets
Low-profile personalized badges
Names, short shop labels, and cart labels
Choose Medium if you want the most balanced name plate size.
1-3/4" Large Labels
The 1-3/4" Large size is best when you want a larger name plate with more visual impact. This size stands out more than Medium and works well for short text, names, shop labels, and bold personalization.
The Large size fits well on the top space of most toolboxes like US General, Snap-on, Husky, Matco and ICON toolboxes.
Best for:
Larger toolbox name plates
Top drawer faces
Cabinets and carts
Short text like names or shop labels
More noticeable personalized badges
Examples include:
DAD’S TOOLS
MIKE’S BOX
BOB'S GARAGE
Choose Large when you want a bigger name plate that still fits common toolbox layouts.
2-3/8" XL Labels
The 2-3/8" XL size is the big and bold option. It is best for larger surfaces and oversized name plates with short text. This size is more noticeable and works well when you want a strong visual presence.
This size is typically only suited for the largest drawers, doors, and cabinets. It may be slightly oversized for standard top drawer faces like those on a US General toolbox.
It works especially well on:
Large bottom drawers
Cabinet doors
Fridges
Garage storage units
Best for:
Big and bold name plates
Large drawers
Doors and cabinets
Fridges
Oversized bottom drawers
Strong visual personalization
Choose XL when you have the space and want the badge to stand out.
Jumbo Magnets and Garage Signs
Jumbo magnets are separate from standard name plate sizes and are intended for larger display pieces.
These are best for signs, plaques, slogans, and multi-line text rather than toolbox drawers.
Best for:
Garage signs
Shop plaques
Slogans
Multi-line text
Large display magnets
If you need something bigger than an XL name plate, jumbo magnets are the right choice.
Important Details About ColKy Custom Magnetic Tool Box Labels, Badges and Signs
ColKy offers custom magnetic tool box badges with a maximum length of 9 inches. This tends to be around 18 characters, including spaces for our 1" size. If your text is longer, it may have to be compressed slightly to fit within our standard machine capabilities.
Shorter text will always look better, especially on larger sizes like Large and XL. These sizes are designed for bold, simple wording rather than long phrases.
When choosing your text, keep it simple and general. Instead of using long or overly specific phrases, shorten them to clean, easy-to-read labels.
For example:
Instead of MEASURING TOOLS, use MEASURING
Instead of PAINTING SUPPLIES, use PAINTING
Instead of PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVERS, use SCREWDRIVERS
This approach keeps your labels readable and visually balanced, especially from a distance.

Why Size Matters for Magnetic Toolbox Labels
Choosing the right size affects how quickly you can find your tools and how professional your workspace looks. A label that is too small may be hard to read, while one that is too large can look cluttered or out of place. This toolbox label size guide helps you balance visibility, space, and style.
Toolbox Label Size Guide: Final Recommendation
If you are organizing drawers
The 5/8" Small and 1" Standard sizes work best—but always consider drawer height and handle placement, especially on newer toolboxes where labels can get partially hidden.
For name plates
The 1-3/16" Medium size is the standard and best overall choice.
If you want a larger name plate, go with 1-3/4" Large.
If you want something big and bold, choose 2-3/8" XL (60).
If you need a sign, plaque, slogan, or multi-line design, go with a Jumbo Magnet.
The right size badge should fit the space, be easy to read, and match how bold you want your setup to look.
